A malicious staff member almost caused us to pay $800 and put us through a nightmare... Do not walk away until your rent is formally closed, we were charged in a week for a damage prior to our rental!

Don't be too hard to them. Be reasonable, it's often not the person in front of you who have done wrong. Always better to discuss than to go bananas.
